Storytelling at the Mòd

Storytelling is a great competition at the Mòd, with lots of variety and fun!

2025 competitions

**Important** Enter the competition for your child's school year or age on 1 October 2025 (the time of the Royal National Mòd) - so, for example:

  • age 8 in June 2025, but 9 by 1 October 2025, enter age 9-10 competition.

The storytelling competitions for 2025 are:

  • age 5-8 (on 1 Oct '25) - boys and girls
  • age 9-10 (on 1 Oct '25) - boys and girls
  • age 11-12 (on 1 Oct '25) - boys and girls
  • age 13-15 (on 1 Oct '25) - boys and girls
  • age 16-18 (on 1 Oct '25) - boys and girls.

Time limit

Stories are limited to 4 minutes for ages 5-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15.

For the age 16-18 competition only, the time limit is 5 minutes.

Stories can be shorter than the time limit (but not longer).

What story?

Children can tell any story they choose! The great thing about this competition is the range of stories told. Children could, for example, write a story themselves, perhaps about something that happened to them, or tell a well-known fairy tale, or maybe get inspiration from a school reading book.

If you need help finding a story, get in touch with us.

From memory

Children should not refer to music or words during their performance - they should perform from memory. This can seem daunting at first, and means that a fair bit of practice is needed, but it usually comes together in the end.

Actions and props

For storytelling (unlike singing and poetry) children can use actions and props when performing.

Do we submit a copy of the words?

No - you don’t need to submit a written copy of the words. Children can just turn up and recite their story - the judges won’t refer to any written words.
